This is just one of many plants being grown in the Edible Garden part of the Museum Gardens in York.
This area of land was disused for many years. The presence of derelict wartime wooden huts gave a clue how long. A few years ago the land was cleared and planted with a huge array of plants. Parts of all of them are edible. It is a rather beautiful place, and is relatively quiet - a lovely place to sit.
English lavender is a favourite in cottage gardens and herb beds. It also suits contemporary garden styles and makes an aromatic border edging around vegetable or herb plots. It is the hardiest lavender and is very attractive to bees and butterflies.
Thank you all for your lovely comments and favs, they are very much appreciated.
Katharine went to Yorkshire Lavender on the edge of the Howardian Hills north-east of York a few years ago. Sadly none of the plants she bought have survived. So if I want more photos it looks like I will be going back to the Museum Gardens!
