Louise and I had a day in Stamford while I was visiting her, and one of the impressive features of the town was the number of churches. We visited and looked round five of them, and were impressed by their interesting histories.
The church in this shot is All Saints Church, a grade one listed building, and one of a very large number of listed buildings in the town.
All Saints Church has a very small amount of 12th-century stonework, but the bulk of the church dates from the 13th century. Extensive additions were made by the Browne family in the 15th century. John Browne, Merchant of the Staple of Calais, funded the 15th-century construction. His son, William, Mayor of the Calais Staple, funded and built the spire. Members of the Browne family are the only people buried inside the church. The late-15th century work is of "considerable inventiveness" in its use of architectural details such as ornamental battlements.
The interior was impressive as well, and there was a musician playing a piano while we were there, which added to our pleasure.
The church also plays host to Peregrines, which in 2021 nested in the tower for the first time, and two chicks, a male and a female fledged successfully.
A church full of interest, in a town full of interest. Hopefully there will be a chance to explore more on a future visit to see Louise.
Thank you all for your lovely comments and favs, they are very much appreciated.
I was pleased that Louise and I had time to explore Stamford, though I feel that in many ways there is so much more to discover. Our exploring was rather unplanned, but shortly before leaving we stumbled across the Tourist Information where we found a town trail leaflet with 67 places of interest - so plenty of inspiration for the future.
