I had a brief trip into the cenre of York today to try and find a few more of the Ghosts in the Gardens.
This highwayman and his horse are beside the main path just inside the entrance to the Museum Gardens. They are amongst the easiest ghosts to find, but they are some of the most difficult to take a photo of, with the highwayman being in the light and the horse in the shade below the tree.
The most famous highwayman linked with York was Dick Turpin, but his rather romantic, heroic image is completely false. He murdered, maimed and terriried many. His famous fast ride to York was also false.
Dick Turpin (under a false name) was arrested for shooting a chicken. His former teacher recognised his handwriting in a letter to his brother, and this led directly to him being sentenced to death (for horse stealing), and he was executed in York. He would soon have been forgotten if it wasn't for a very romanticised, largely fictional account of him published in the 1830s, and from that point the legend was born.
Thank you all for your lovely comments and favs, they are very much appreciated.
The mesh that is used to create these sculptures has a reflective coating to enhance the effect, but the effect really does depend on how sunlight strikes them. Sadly we have not seen much sunlight recently. Hopefully we will find a few more before the display ends early in November.
