Usually around the pond we have ducks, geese, and the occasional heron, all hanging out together in comparative peace. Every now and then however, when one of the big Canada geese gets too close or somehow annoys the great blue heron the heron will adopt an aggressive pose and drive the goose away. It happens suddenly, and at speed, without any warning signs that are obvious to me. It happened yesterday morning and sadly I was caught completely off guard and was only able to catch the tail end of the chase.
