This is our great nephew Harry with one of his beloved hens . Harry looks after about 70 hens in his own cabin & loves them all. Dad has a little farm shop at the gate where they sell potatoes, vegetables & Harrys Happy Hens Eggs !! He was riding around on his bicycle with the hen when I took this.
How lovely and the enthusiasm of youth is unforgettable! One of Laura's friends used to keep her hens and won lots of competitions with them. She got married last summer and her grandma gave her a hen house for her Glasgow garden!!!
What a great shot - in aus they will call him the chook boy. Nice capture of him doing what he loves. I have a photo of my grandaughter similar to this. http://365project.org/miraries/nomad/2011-01-19
Oh bless - hens here next week with a bit of luck get the fox-proofing done (a husband in the country would help!) - only three though - I'm not as confident as Harry!
Lovely shot and I am fully with him as far as chickens are concerned, I think they are lovely, my three give me hours of amusement not to mention eggs to die for!!
@judithg You will love your hens Judith , they are fairly easy to look after, the biggest problem Harry has at the moment is red mite ! Having you own eggs is wonderful..the biggest growing hobby in the UK !!
@happypat I'm buying in the mite powder! I was a bit stressed to find a large rat wandering around my greenhouse last night BEFORE I've even got the hens or food - at least I can't blame them for his presence. Having another big tidy up this weekend before I go to the poultry lady - it was half the size of Rafiki (neither cat nor dog saw it -useless - but I think it was more a job for a terrier than a small cat and I'd die if she brought that through the catflap!!). Looking forward to the hens scratching around though!!
@judithg Just be sure you keep the hen food in something rat proof, Harry keeps his in a dustbin with the lid on. I am sorry to say sometimes hens do attract rats rummaging underneath the cabin but I think there are more rats around than people think & it is an ongoing problem anywhere nowadays ! Put some rat poison in a long drainage tile so that no pets can get at it ! You will get very fond of your hens, we have seven hens & one cockerel.
