Yesterday we had occasion to visit Hawkshead in the Lake District. A beautiful picturesque village on the west side of Lake Windermere.
There are lots of quaint narrow cobbled streets & gift shops & becomes very busy with visitors especially in the summer.
Beatrix Potter, the author of the children's books about Peter Rabbit & others lived in Far Sawrey which is the next village along so this part of the Lakes is very popular with the Japanese people.
We had a little walk around the village & a coffee & cake at Poppys.
I love Hawkshead!! I'm going to have to find time to get up there this year. It's good that it gets Japanese visitors beyond London though we are still bemoaning the NT Gift Shop that ruined Hill Top - we liked it best when there was just the grumpy old lady who didn't really like children there! I think Phil Howcroft would say this is 'High Key' which is really effective. And where is Phil? Looks like he may have decided to call it a day which is sad.
@judithg Phil said he might pop back now & again Judith. I posted on his site recently & he replied. Hill Top is full of Japanese tourists now, apparently they learn to read with Peter Rabbit someone told me.
@happypat I'll have to drop by and give him a nudge! The Chinese visitors Rachel takes out on the punts are mad about Winnie the Pooh - maybe that's Disney though!
