Iphone to the rescue. On our way home from the west coast, we stopped at Carrbridge for a coffee and a leg-stretch! I was fascinated by this old packhorse bridge where kids were jumping into the river and you can just see one brave fella swimming up towards the bridge!
The history of the bridge is this : At the beginning of the 18th century, there was no point at which the River Dulnain could be crossed when it was in spate, and burials at the Church of Duthil were often delayed.
Brigadier-Gnl Alexander Grant of Grant, Clan Chief, commissioned a mason to build a bridge. Built in 1717, the bridge was paid for out of stipends of the Parish of Duthil.
Its parapets and side walls were badly damaged in the 18th century and again in the flood of August 1829, giving the appearance it has today.
wow this is amazing masonry isn't it - can you imagine the river flooded and you have a dead body on a pack horse and you are going to go up and across that thing? life suddenly seems very easy and laid back! great image and fascinating history :)
