The Scottish Book Trust have voted 'dreich' as the most iconic Scots word this year. And it truly is dreich at the moment. Lots of rain and very little daylight. I was 'scunnered' yesterday afternoon (a word which made third place this year) and so I went out for a 'plouter' (this word didn't seem to appear in the the top 10) in the rain. I'm sure lots of people driving by thought I was 'glaikit', but I was rewarded by finding my favourite herd of Highland cows out enjoying the dreich day.
For anyone interested :
Dreich - dull and gloomy
Scunnered - fed up
Plouter - to splash aimlessly in mud or water, wade messily through wet ground
Glaikit - stupid
What a fantastic collection of words! Dreich is so onomatopoeiac, you can feel the grey and drizzle when hyou say it. I love all of these, I may just have to adopt them......
I always want to get a pair of scissors and cut the fringe on a Highland Cow so I can see their fabulous eyes......but I wouldn't dare!! Love these creatures. So shaggy, so beautiful.
Oh this is so interesting, I hope I can remember them when needed. I'm always ready to extend my tiny vocabulary,... "To plouter", I could have used every day, when travelling Scotland in September. But I was so glaikitly happy to do so. ;-)
... And sorry to @dreich, I always thought this is your name.
I’m delighted to learn new words even if I don’t even know how to pronounce them. As Casablanca says they are onomatopoeic. And dreich and plouter would come handy these days also in Northern Italy. Fav
