I found this brass plaque, embedded in a pavement in Oslo to be very touching. There were several of them in this area of the city. Herman was born in 1866, deported to Auschwitz in 1942 and was killed on 1st December, 1942. Such a waste of a life.
This reminds me of the monument to victims of the Holocaust I discovered at the center of a little plaza in Rhodes. The day was sunny and bright and the black monolith stood out as a testimony to the entire Jewish population of this Greek island who were taken from it, never to return. We think it will never happen again, but truth is, it has and will. There should be plaques like this world round and children should be taught what they mean. Sad but moving photo.
