Being a product of the sixties, where we made our 'neepy lanterns' out of turnips (the contents of which we ate afterwards in soup or stews), and when we dressed up in anything we could find in the house to go 'guising', I'm not a big fan of the modern commercialised Halloween with pumpkins and fancy outfits galore! Bah Humbug, perhaps, but that's just how it is. However, having passed this old fishing hut whilst out walking yesterday, I couldn't resist using this photo, with a little tweaking to make it appropriate, for today's post on the hallowed eve.
@maggiemae No, I can assure you it was turnips. Everyone (in Scotland at least) used turnips back then. We'd never seen a pumpkin. I can tell you that our hands were pretty darned sore after houking out all that hard flesh!
Love your photo and totally sing the same song about going out guizing with turnip lantern, singing / telling funny stories/ poems to neighbours and friends.
And soup after with the insides not being wasted. 😊
Beautiful old hut and surrounding.
Halloween is a new holiday for us. It is being fought heavily by the present church. I don't like him, but because I don't like holidays and crowds at all.
