We left our hotel at about 6:45 a.m. this morning hoping to capture smoke in the mountains. We saw a little at the Newfound gap but a trip up to the dome parking lot was this shot. Now I can say I have been to the Smokey's. We are headed home and decided to put up in Georgia tonight. Well the Esmeralda tried to take us through a gated community to get to the hotel and wouldn't give up the idea. We saw a sheriff pulling out of a side street and pulled in and waved to get his attention. The sheriff gave us a friendly wave and drove off. Thank you kind sir for all the help. Lol But we made it here save and sound.
Welcome to Georgia! I'm in Roswell, outside of Atlanta. How long are you here? I'll be heading up to Smokies Thursday tobsee Taffy and Junko. Hope you enjoy your trip! If you need any GA advice, fire away!
@taffy My advice. If you are going over front Gatlinburg to Cherokee or vice versa be on the road as the sun is rising. The Smoke can dissappear early. Do the dome. You are fitter than me and can do thar hike. Dress in layers.
@joansmor -- too bad you won't be coming back through when @darylo and @taffy and I will be there, but I appreciate your words of experience and advice! Not sure what it means as I'm not a local but perhaps our driver does. Gatlinburg to Cherokee as sun is rising and smoke disappearing and doing a dome? I DO get the part of dressing in layers. Was it cold enough for more than a light jacket?

This link is about ten dome. And this is about the gap which is on the road between Gatlinburg and Cherokee. You use travel time for study, etc. So here is a little reading for you. Where I started.

Thanks for the advice Joan! I need to look at a map! I'm excited about the trip after seeing your photos...ditto re Junko's question...and I'm definitely bringing a tripod -- think we all are, just hoping that some leaves remain!
@taffy the pollution is a problem but at least in the Smokey's people think it is smoke. Will be using the haze button a lot to process. I didn't have my polarizer but used a low ND filter to cut th brilliant sun. Hoping my camera pictures came out good. I am so excited now to see your shots.
