Ice Fishing by joansmor

Ice Fishing

Wish I could have gotten a better shot, but there were snow banks all along and I could barely get this shot. But it is one of those documenting shots showing a popular activity here in Maine. The last couple of year I haven't seen any shacks on the ice as we have had a lack of ice in Southern Maine. Not an activity I participate in believe me. Fishing is boring and ice fishing you get to freeze and drink beer. Nope. I'll stay home.
This is so facinating, lovely shot and gorgeous blue sky.

I just think this is fascinating :)

Photo is good enough for me! Don't be too harsh for the ice fishers. I've never done it, but with some luck they get home with some fresh fish!

Super scene - all the atmosphere is there.

Great photo and great fun, I'm sure for those who enjoy it. I don't think that is something that is ever going to be on my bucket list. Smile.

Great winter shot...Looks icy cold.

I've always wondered if it was really worth all that effort to fish in freezing temps? great shot

So interesting to see this! I only thought they did ice fishing in Alaska. I love how we can learn so much on 365!

Not sure I would want to do it but it looks a fascinating way to fish.

I guess it's the old one man's ceiling is another man's floor sort of hobby- but like you, I'd rather be in my home looking at the ceilings and floors! Good shot.

Cool image... not my idea of a good time but I'm glad it makes others happy!

I enjoyed ice fishing - never tried it with the little huts though - think I'd just put on more layers and stay outside. Good shot of it though.

Ice fishing isn't for me either, but I like the shot. Part of everyday life in the winter in the cold north.

I used to have family that went. They’d catch the fish and it would be frozen stiff as a board before they brought it home. So was it fresh or frozen.

What a fascinating shot!

It doesn't sound like something I'd enjoy either :)

Great light and textures.

I didn't realise it was quite that cold in Maine! I'd stay home too:)

The only life you know is the one you lived. For me as a kid my dad would go ice fishing every Saturday, all winter.Every Sunday was spent cleaning fish. My dad took something that should have been fun and turned it into work. Some guys jig for fish, that is what my dad did. Others put out tip ups, when a fish takes the bait a flag goes up and a guy will run over and pull his line up hoping for a fish.Still don't sound like fun. Well some guy's sit in their trucks staying warm and drinking beer while doing this. Still don't sound like fun. After a bit of drinking to watch a drunk guy run across the ice falling down is funny. Others with them shacks sometime have them heated and will play cards, drink, fish, play dice games, cook, kind of like a tailgate party at a football game. My dad fished and would not stop until we had our limit.Sometimes it was dark when we got on the lake and dark when we went home Then when we got home my mother would act like we had a party out on the ice. When I would say we didn't she would call me a lier, that was covering for my dad. I always wished we did have a party on the ice like other people. Dad would buy some liverwurst, stink cheese and crackers for lunch. I was a skinny kid. Not the kind of food a kid likes. Dad would say if you where hungry you would eat it. I got told that a lot.The movie "Escanaba In The Moonlight" is about deer hunting and I know they have a play kind of like that also about ice fishing. To get a feel for the life in the frozen north should watch"Escanaba In The Moonlight" or YouTube it and see some clips. @merrelyn @susanharvey @milaniet @kwind @olivetreeann @radiogirl @judithdeacon @pamknowler @samae @henrir @hajeka also try the song on Youtube "Da Turdy Point Buck"Then the next time you see a little shack on the ice you will think what fun.

Great capture, and here I thought it was confined to Minnesota

A nice capture

@wildernesswillie I have seen some shacks that are pretty darn fancy. Then there are the ones that fall through the ice. I'd rather take pictures of them then ice fish. My father was not a hunter or fisherman to speak of - he might go out once or twice. So not in my history.

Makes for a great photo though! I will have to see them the next time I'm in Canada for winter.
