Herring Run by kwind

Herring Run

Every year herring spawn and turn the ocean turquoise blue. It only happens for a few days and usually not this close to my home.

Here's an article that explains for what happens and shows a few more photos... https://www.campbellrivermirror.com/community/mars-moment-herring-spawn-to-produce-increased-marine-life-activity-near-shoreline/

How beautiful and how fascinating.
My father's family in Outer Hebrides (Scotland) worked on herring fishing boats in 1890s and 'followed the herring' along the north coast of Scotland and down the east coast as far as Great Yarmouth. But I've never been aware of the herring spawn. Now I must explore.
Gorgeous colours and thank you for your information 😊

It was exciting then for you to see and photograph it! It sure is a pretty color- do the fish stay underwater or do you see some surface activity as well?
March 13th, 2021
@olivetreeann I don't think you can see the fish but there tends to be seals, sea lions and eagles around feasting!
March 13th, 2021
@kwind Oooo- just as exciting!

How cool! I didn't not know this info and we dutch eat quite a lot of herrings. Now living in the USA , for the longest time we celebrated the new herrings and came together to make a party and eat the new herrings ( after they finish they herring spawn I guess lol) . Great capture. special coloring.
