St. Georges Church, King's Stanley. by ladymagpie

St. Georges Church, King's Stanley.

Another beautiful building in my village is the Parish Church of St. Georges, King's Stanley. Parts date back to 1210 with the majority being added in the Tudor Period (13th & 14th century).

The main reason for the picture comes from a very sad story of one of the gravestones that carries this poem:

"Twas as she tript from cask to cask,
In at a bung-hole quickly fell;
Suffocation was her task;
She had not time to say farewell".

Martha Collins, the 9 year old daughter of one of the publicans was playing on top of the beer casks in the cellar when she tripped and fell into a full barrel of beer and drowned. 1st August 1800. I'm sure some hardy drinkers are thinking what a way to go, but a sad story indeed.

Sad, but Martha's memory lives on through story-telling and a beautiful photo...fav for me.

i love the structural elements: the old church, the different shapes of the grave markers, those manicured plantings.

Oh great, now i feel guilty. I laughed at the poem until I read the next paragraph. Odd little ditty.
Great pic, though.
