I appreciate this is not the most interesting picture but it comes with a WARNING story of what has happened to me over the last 24 hours.
Just after I uploaded yesterday's picture of the strange plant I started to feel unwell which became worse over the evening. By 9.00 pm I had started vomiting and unable to walk due to abdominal pain and also in my kidneys and liver. I decided it was time to make a medical call which ended with me being rushed to hospital by my Brother.
The diagnoses at the time was a urine infection and I was given antibiotics and painkillers. I took the table before going to bed (At home) but by 2.00 am I awoke with my tongue so large and swollen I couldn't lick my lips or swallow, I was having a reaction to the antibiotics. The picture above is my doctors surgery where I went this morning and my Doc changed my tablets and made a note that I was allergic to the other tablet.
NOW THE WARNING: After reading your comments yesterday, and on Facebook, it seems that yesterday's plant Arum Lily is very poisonous and I remember bending and shaping the stems to get a good picture, the symptoms of this poisoning are very similar to what happened to me last night.
Be careful what you touch for your 365project, I'm just waiting for a call from my doctor to make her aware of what might have happened.
OMG that is an awful story. Glad you got help & are on the road to recovery. It would seem to me that these abandoned plants should have to be detoxified or at the very least secured with very high fences.
I know how awful an allergic reaction feels as I woke up in the night with my tongue all swollen and to cut a long story short, I had developed an allergy to one of my blood pressure pills that I had been taking for 10 years! It is very frightening so I now always keep antihistamine tablets with me in case anything like this happens again!
My wife is allergic the Primula Plant, I used to grow them and still do but only in the Garden, I grew two beautiful plants and put them on the bedside tables, they looked wonderful, but the next morning my wife's Eyes and Face was swollen to twice the size, hope you get well soon.
Sorry you've been unwell, hope the allergic reaction clears quickly. Unfortunately, there are so many poisonous plants, that many of us are unaware of.
Wow that is quite an experience. There are quite a few common house plants that are toxic in one way or another. Some like the Poinsettia pose a danger to cats, dogs and humans.
My Goodness, Heather, you certainly have been through the mill recently. Perhaps the moral of the story is :if you don't know what it is, treat it with suspicion until you do. Thank you for sharing this salutary tale and I hope you are feeling much better very soon.
Wish you well,,, hate smell of Lilly's so now a good excuse to not allow in house ! By the way Lilly pollen is poison to cats if they rub the Lilly and lick them self clean, it is on the RSPCA list of position on the web site
I knew they were a weed here - but didn't know they were a killer weed! Do hope you are recovering from your nasty experience. I'd send you a bunch of flowers but I only have these lilies here :)
How frightening! I have owned peace lilies in the past, and never knew this! I hope the second antibiotic is working well and you are feeling much better! Take care!
