Down at the Old Mill. by ladymagpie

Down at the Old Mill.

Thank you all for your best wishes on my Birthday yesterday, you all made me feel so much younger, well at least a year or two.

The valleys I live in are famous for it's sheep and the woolen industries with many mills being driven by the rivers that flow throughout the valleys. This old mill is empty now and there are plans for it to be converted to flats/apartments along with the surrounding buildings.

It was built in 1817 and was the first to be built with a metal framework for fire protection, I found a door with the date above it. Can you imagine the hundreds of workers walking down from their hillside cottages to toil for many hours in a very noisy atmosphere, even as young as twelve years old. Deafness among the workers was not unusual and there was soon a sign language used between the workers as they couldn't hear each other due to the noise. It was late when they trudged back home up the hills each evening.

View with the dark surround.
I am glad they will re-purpose this mill rather than tear it down!

It was a hard life for all mill workers. Love the huge windows in this building. A new flat here would be very pleasant.
