Lady Magpie has been dabbling in the local auctions again and come out with a beautiful item that had been incorrectly cataloged by the Auction House. What I purchased was cataloged as a hallmarked silver William IV Sauce Ladle, London 1831, maker William Schofield (17 cm long).
When I got it home I instantly notice that they had misread these marks as in the picture - left to right:
Lion emblem - Stirling Silver
Lion's Head with Crown - London pre 1822
q - Date letter for 1791
King George III head.
W.S - Silversmith William Sumner 1
What gets to me with this ladle is that it's been made before Nelson and The Battle of Trafalgar (1805), Just after The Boston Tea Party in America (1773) and for those down under in Australia most parts of your country hadn't been discovered yet with our famous Captain James Cook first landed in 1770. OK the dutch got there first.
Thanks for looking at this and also for all your comments and FAV's for yesterdays village corner. Again view with the dark surround.
