This place brings back many memories for me as I worked in the office during 1970, in fact you can see my first family home on the extreme left. All I had to do to get to work was walk down the garden path and into my office, yes I was often late with my toast in my hand.
There are mentions of this mill right back from 1085 when it was one of the valleys cloth mills. The red brick building were built in 1810 and included 2 weaving sheds, the bricks coming from the local brick works nearby. As the wool industries died out many mills were converted for other businesses.
In 1914 this became a mattress manufacture and another change occurred in 1927 when it became a paper bag manufacture, which it was in my time of employment and still there today.
I was out geocaching and this has brought me back to my history, my 48 year old Son was brought back to this home from the maternity hospital, so long ago.
They always say the nearer you live to a place the later you are arriving! Happy memories then Heather! Interesting to see this wooden mill. Looks very like the cotton mills of east Lancashire which are pretty much all converted into posh apartments etc.
Interesting old building....glad it is still working and not derelict. I can relate to the 5 minutes late and toast in hand....I also used to live within site of my office......no more than 100 yards away.......and still late :)
I enjoyed reading the history of this fine old building. Thankfully it is still standing and has escaped demolition like so many others. Thanks for sharing.
Thanks everyone, it certainly wakes the memories in the brain up.
