The writing may have gone from the walls and the small tree replaced with a bus shelter, but this lovely building is still being used as a great shop in Stonehouse High Street, situated right next to the village green.
As you can see it was a busy grocery shop which had a very posh interior. Counters surrounded the outer walls and you would have been several shop assistants there to fetch all the items on your shopping list, no supermarkets and trolleys in these days.
Later years groceries continued with both Burtons and Fine Fare running this shop, I’m sure many will remember getting their shopping here. Today there is something fishy going on with Lobby’s Tackle being the proprietors. The previous businesses wouldn’t allow any flies in the shop, but today you can purchase flies and bait along with your rods and reels.
You may notice a small connection between the old and new pictures, in the old picture you will see in the writing it says, “Sole proprietors”, whilst in the new one I’m sure they would advice you how to catch some Sole for tea.
Isn’t that a wonderful picture? I do love looking at the top one....what an interesting place & of course I can remember shops where you stood at the counter & asked for what you wanted...not quite as old as this shop....they do t make them like that any more!
