I think this was one of the most remote places I've walked to whilst searching for some geocaches. It was along a very derelict part of of the old canal and was overgrown in many places. I started off at the eastern end of the Sapperton Canal tunnel and walked about a mile and a half.
I had passed another roundhouse, this one disused, followed by going under one of Isambard Kingdom Brunel's railway bridges. I had already found 2 caches and this was the third along the towpath, if you could call it that.
The path came to a dead end as someone had purchased the canal land and had fenced it off. They will have to return it if the canal is to be restored. I would like to have continued, but the path went into the fields where the source of the River Thames starts. Perhaps I could have turned the tap off and see the river drain through London.
As I stood beside this old bridge the silence was very scary and I thought, what am I doing here, away from safety on my own. I suddenly heard a strange noise that got louder and louder so I hid under the bridge. Peering out I saw a tractor and trailer crossing the bridge. I wasn't spotted and decided to return the mile and a half to my car parked near to the Tunnel House Pub. Perhaps you can see why I don't go to these places on my own today, well not with my wobbly knee and old age.
I would have run Heather….it’s a sad thing that we feel nervous even in the daylight in very quiet places like this but that’s the times we live in. Probably quite safe but we scare ourselves reading papers! Lovely stone bridge though!
Maybe you could have asked the farmer three questions. ;-)
