This is the main river in town that is currently flooded. Just to give you an idea....the river from this side, doesn't normally start until after the 3rd set of pylons that you can only just see between the trees in the distance, and it would be nowhere near this height. The fence on the left of shot is a puppy park...completely under water. There is a road that crosses from the right side of shot and goes under the big main bridge, in between the 1st & 2nd sets of pylons & then continues parallel with the bridge down to a lower level bridge that gets used every day by many locals, including myself, when the river is not in flood - you can see in the link below, a shot I previously took back in June, of this lower level bridge when there was a small flood that only reached the lower level bridge, just to give a bit of perspective of how big this current flood is - http://365project.org/leggzy/365/2016-06-23
To the right of the shot in the distance, you can see the tops of some picnic tables, and there is also an orange garbage bin floating in the water as well. Further to the right, and out of shot, there are hockey fields that are currently inundated with water and also completely flooded.
Even though there has been no rain for the past few days, I don't think the river is going to subside too quickly, as they are still currently releasing 50,000 odd megalitres of water each day from the dam upstream (there is another shot of water being released from the dam earlier this month here - http://365project.org/leggzy/365/2016-09-08 , and this is part of the reason why the river is so high.....and further downstream from us, there are towns that are being evacuated as the water will only reach them some time tomorrow, and is expected to hit them quite hard. I hope they aren't affected too much and that homes & businesses are prepared so that there is only minimal damage. Fingers crossed!
Ok, novel now over....thank you if you have read this far :)
I get the feeling that one day you will be telling your grandchildren about the great flood of 2017, and showing them the line you carved in that tree to mark the high water level (go on, do it).
The water has certainly had a huge impact on the area. Hopefully the damage can be minimised as much as is possible under the circumstances. Stay safe.
I did read that far because I am only too aware of the damage that water can do. The village where we have our home in Scotland is still recovering from the floods of December 2015. Many people are still not back in their homes and many businesses are still not operational again. We need water, but boy it can be destructive. I hope it subsides very soon!
I've been watching on the news, and still can't believe that floodimg is happening again. Therr has been so much rain this year
I feel for not only the home and shop owners who face damage again, but those poor farmers who have lost their crops..
Its been a shocker of a year.
@onewing no, Forbes is the next biggest town downstream & they will be copping it today. Lots of evacuations happening there - fortunately, nothing like that here, except the caravan park being evacuated as it is right on the riverbank
