Whip-poor-will

Black Hill had a free field trip to Thompson, Wildlife Management Area in Virginia for its volunteer staff to look for wildflowers with a member that could identify them. I ended up being the only volunteer that didn't cancel because of the rain. I only took a few pictures since it was raining and getting it from under my rain poncho was a little more challenging then I thought it would be. On our way back out of the trail a naturalist spotted this Whip-poor-will about 6 feet off the path on the ground . He is so hard to see I can't believe she spotted him. I took two shots before he finally had enough of us and flew a little further into the woods. Had my 35mm lens on the camera thinking a couple close up of the wildflowers and it would be easy to keep dry so this shot has a BIG crop, otherwise I don't think you could see him. I can't and I know where he is. Their camouflage is amazing.....
He looks like he's made out of wood. COOL!

@yonnie Oh I wouldn't have seen him either. They really had to show me where to look and then it was still hard to believe he was a bird and alive.
