When you go to Yellowstone National Park, you have to see Old Faithful. It has its own historic district, and is one of the most storied sites in Yellowstone, America's very first national park. Old Faithful is a cone geyser, a geothermal feature that erupts from 106 to 185 feet in the air, discharging between 3,700 to 8,400 gallons of boiling water; the eruptions last from 1 1/2 to 5 minutes. It erupts every hour or so and when you park there are signs giving the approximate time of the next eruption.
One of my most favorite Yellowstone trips was when we stayed right by Old Faithful and I could go out at the crack of dawn to take photos when the park was quiet and not so crowded. This trip was just a quick drive thru really as the crowds were monumental, you could not get within one half mile of most of the attractions. I stood back from the crowd to take this photo, as there was no way to get closer. July is the height of the tourist season, you really can see everything much better in the first weeks of September.
I could go on and on about Yellowstone, it is truly a national American treasure. I will post more photos from the park over the coming days.
