Photographer Edward Steichen’s first love was painting
He was commissioned to paint 7 murals for a NYC townhome in 1911. Before he could complete them the townhome owner sold the home. Steichen rolled up the canvases and put them away. They were discovered a year or so ago and underwent conservation treatment at the DMA. They are exquisite, large, gold-leafed murals of Steichen’s friends and their floral counterparts
@milaniet@happysnaps@ludwigsdiana@taffy@annied Thank you! To think these were just rolled up for over a hundred years, the conservation was amazing, the gold leaf was especially wonderful. @annied thank you for the fave!
Lovely paintings and photos. Thanks for sharing. They look somewhat reminiscent of The Lady in Gold by Klimt. Although these likely predate that painting. They might share an influence.
@mbrutus I think the gold leaf on these pieces is reminiscent of Klimt’s work, as well as the Art Deco style. I was just struck at how fortunate Steichen was, how talented he was, to paint like this then move to the medium of photography where he became so famous!
