The Water Lily (American Lotus) with seed pod forming in the center

We have always called these flowers Water Lilies, after some interesting comments on the lily seed pods about them looking like Lotus flowers I learned that these are “American Lotus - Nelumbo Lutea”, one of 90 varieties of Water Lilies/Lotus flowers here. My goodness the things we learn on 365. The ovary (seed pod) in the center of this flower will be all that’s left after the petals fall away. Pretty amazing, to me! @happypat, @ludwigsdiana, @pusspup thank you for your comments that started my research today!
This is such a pretty water lily.

@milaniet @stevepam @photographycrazy @danette @beryl @ludwigsdiana @happysnaps @onewing @joansmor @maggiemae thank you so much for your wonderful comments and faves! I know the Japanese Gardens in Fort Worth had water lilies in one of their ponds but honestly you just don’t see them at the lake’s edge. I will just have to watch for them.

@radiogirl as it turns out, Lotus flowers are water lilies! @bkbinthecity thank you! @julzmaioro that sounds amazing. I read that the seeds out of the pods pop like pop corn and are delicious and nutritious!
