Czech-German St Mary’s Catholic Church of the Assumption, Praha, Texas
This painted church was built in 1895 and painted by Swiss-born artist Gottfried Flurry, using stenciling, in-fill painting and freehand techniques. His trompe-l’oeil designs mimic stone vaults and Gothic tracery reminiscent of Central European models. St. Mary’s caretaker Ben Popelka polishes everything from the floors to the ceiling by himself, it was incredibly spotless, especially considering it is in use every day and has a large congregation.
@happypat there’s something so special about these churches compared to churches in other parts of our state. The Czech, German and Moravian immigrants really knew how to build exquisite houses of worship. Honestly they were not rich people, that is what is so amazing to me.
