This little building at one of Grapevine Lake’s parks honors the Texas Sesquicentennial, complete with our Alamo and flags. The sesquicentennial celebrations were quite something. Prince Charles came to present the Winston Churchill Award to computer magnate Ross Perot. Texas opened our own Embassy in London near Hyde Park for the sesquicentennial year. One man walked the circumference of the state, 3,200 miles; he was a naturalized citizen from Romania and loved his home in Texas. A 3,000 mile wagon train criss-crossed the state all year. Thousands of celebrations were held all over the state, it was a fun year. The mural on this building has not been restored since it was painted in 1986, I see it every time we cross the lake dam, finally took this photo from the car window Saturday.
Texas sure has an amazing history. I hope those who wish to destroy other components of our history don't start going after yours! Good idea to capture this mural now before it wears down further. Nice shot!
I lived in Texas in 1986 and remember the hupla surrounding the recognition of the age of The Republic. Everyone struggled to pronounce the 150 anniversary. Cute building.
