A rainwater cistern at the wildflower center

There are several of these stone cisterns at the center, all part of the rainwater collection system. They collect over 300,000 gallons of rainwater a year for the center’s landscape watering needs. They are beautiful stone structures, in the architectural style we call “Hill Country architecture”. Austin is in Texas’ Hill Country, 3 hours south of my home.
That’s a great way to obtain water for nourishing the landscape.

This reminds me of the cisterns I saw in Israel- only they were dug into the ground and even larger! Nice shot.
