It is in the midst of a major conservation effort. Moisture in the air (San Antonio has a very humid climate) and salt in the soil have caused serious issues with it’s walls and foundation. The photo on the left shows moisture and salt monitors in a corner outside. The right photo shows the interior with main columns shielded from view while they continue the archeological efforts. A group of Alamo defender descendants, the Daughters of the Republic (DAR) of Texas, ran the Alamo for years. They made no effort to protect it, that is why the conservation efforts are so extreme now. In 2011 the State of Texas removed the DAR and assumed responsibility for this treasured historical icon.
After having that private tour of the stone house on Cornell (only 150+ years old), I now understand how much work and money these old buildings take. I am glad Texas will do so.
Nice pictures to show the conservation effort! It’s good to know somebody is doing something about it. I it’s a shame they are just now starting to put some effort into preserving it.
