Blaauwklippen vineyards with Stellenboschberg as a backdrop.
The first vine cuttings arrived in the Cape in 1655 from Europe. The vines grew well and four years later the first South African wine was harvested. In 1690 the owner of Blaauwklippen who was a French Huguenot fleeing religious persecution in his country, planted his first vines. By 1709 the crop yielded 570 litres of wine.
I love those mountains in the background, even though they appear very arid - maybe its that time of year. Very interesting information to go with beautiful capture.
Breathtaking background. I’m so glad your wineries are able to grow and harvest their grapes now. Did any of them stay closed after the pandemic restrictions were lifted?
Beautiful country and such fascinating information! One really has to admire people who move to an entirely different country and managed to survive successfully! Especially in those days
Makes a nice half and half shot.
