Down in the Catlins area of Southern NZ, Cathedral caves are only accessible 2 hours either side of low tide and sometimes not at all! This time we were told the waves were still swirling in and out of the cave and you had to make a dash in between waves. In addition there were bluebottle jellyfish floating around! It was very exciting doing this dash and every so often climb quickly on to surrounding rocks to keep your feet dry! The caves are very high and go into the cliff quite deeply. We oldies did quite well amongst all the youngsters!
Three good things:
1. The bush walk down to the beach was gorgeous as usual with NZ bush,
2. The food is very dear here - captive customers - no cafe for miles!
3. Ha, brought some sausages and salad to eat in our bedroom unit (visitor kitchen next door)!
that is a gorgeous shot, maggiemae. great use of the lighting. great exercise for you. as partner's mother once said "i'm just old, i'm not dead yet!" when her grandchildren thought they beat her at euchre.
Fave for me too maggiemae both for the lovely atmospheric photo & your bravery!!! A girl was drowned recently doing a sport of which I have forgotten the name of but involved scrambling over rocks, jumping into the water, swimming along then climbing onto the rocks again. She unfortunately got swept into a cave & the incoming tide drowned her...such a tragedy.
Oh this rocks, Maggiemae. I went to Mammoth caves earlier in the year and got wretched photos...I was so bummed. This is exactly the kind of thing I wanted. You did great with this. Fav!
Lovely light and pov in this cave shot. I used to go caving in West Virginia when I was younger, wearing a helmet with a light on it, knee pads, etc. I have memories of wriggling through very narrow crawls with mud the texture of peanut butter. I'll never do it again now, but am glad I got to see a part of the earth that most people never see. The cave you were in sounds very exciting! Fav for me!
