Recovering from the bike ride, I took my camera into town hoping for something to happen! Away down the road I saw red lights flashing meaning a train was arriving that would cross the road.
John put his foot down, I primed the camera, leapt out of the door but the train actually stopped in the middle of the road. It was a special train delivering travellers to our diverse and interesting town of Oamaru. On the other side these two in their Victorian dress welcomed the tourists with smiles and brochures! I’m sure they weren’t paid for this!
Three good things:
1. This train only operates on Sundays and the Farmers Market is open. But the wind came in and made it unpleasant. However I did buy some new potatoes and some special tomatoes.
2. I am so totally in awe of some photos, it becomes a bit hard to hope for the same quality! But I refuse to get up at 5am!
3. All the firewood is stacked. John calls himself the ‘wood chucker’……”if a wood chucker could chuck wood, how much wood could a wood chucker chuck if he could chuck wood!
#3 !!!! A real tongue twister for sure! Your Victorian days will be coming up,soon I expect, I know your town loves it's historical times. I haven't heard you mention the ukulele lately, are you practising? It must be very nice to be welcomed by these two ladies.
@happypat I haven't been to ukulele for ages, Pat. I had some difficulty thinking I was singing out of tune and the look two ladies gave each other on either side of me indicated that when I started singing. I may have been imagining it but I'm very nervous of going back just in case!
@maggiemae oh dear that's so sad, you loved the ukelele! Those ladies were rude to give you that impression! Have the courage to go back & perhaps ask them, if they think your voice is not up to it you could offer to mime as its the playing you like most isn't it? I think you are a bit sensitive like me...I would be the same but hopefully you can still p,ah & sing quiet!
@happypat thanks Pat for that encouragement. Perhaps I can do this- I'm really very shy amongst groups and as you say sensitive. I did think I could try and practice my singing but need to do that on my own and I'm not often on my own.
@maggiemae I give out good confident vibes to anyone I meet but am really very shy at coming forward. That's why to ask someone to pose or even for anyone to catch me even taking a photo of anything really mortified me. I am ok in touristy places when everyone has a camera. Is there anyone who runs the group, perhaps have a word with them......stand next to someone else too!
Lovely vintage feel to this, nicely done. (My husband tells me I have the best voice in the County, terrible in the Town, but lovely in the Country!!!!)
you and i both shy with people - most people wouldn't believe it, but that's the truth! as usual your processing is top notch with this photo as i thought it was actually an old one which you ressurected from a scanner or something. fantastic. and what does special tomatoes look like? perhaps purple coloured? :-)
@summerfield I have lots of silly foibles, Vikki - hate using the phone, dislike polite conversation, could not and would not ever do any public speaking (unless I've had too many gins)!
Wonderful processing Maggiemae! How nice of those ladies to greet the tourists that way! Also just to put my two cents in re: the ukelele... I agree with @happypat. It would be a shame to give up something you enjoy without trying to figure out a better solution. Do you have a way to record yourself to see how you sound? Could you ask John or does that put him in a bad spot? In any case, playing without singing could still be great fun!
@mccarth1 If I sing by myself I can hear myself going off key. John says I'm ok when singing with others but how can he tell? I couldn't not sing, I'm afraid - I love to sing! @happypat
#3 of your good things ... Easy for you to say!!! LOL
How cute that these ladies would greet the tourists as they got off the train. While living in Alaska, every June they had the "Golden Days" and everyone that lived there, dressed back in the pioneer days. Men had to grow beards or at least appear to be growing one or were arrested and had to pay a fine that went to feed the homeless. So I really love this photo and what the ladies were doing. FAV!
As for your singing!! When I sing, my husband goes out on the porch outside. I asked him one day why he always went out there when I sang. He said it was to prove to the neighbors that he wasn't beating me!!!!! I can't sing a lick, but I sing anyway!!! Why? Cause it makes me feel good and if you don't like it, don't listen!! Don't give up something because of someone else!!!
"A woodchuck would chuck as much wood as a woodchuck chucks, if a woodchuck could chuck wood" ... that's the answer that I learned in the dim and distant past. I like the Victorian ladies and the processing in this, which seems to suit them.
Love the way you've processed this Maggie. You are so talented. As for your singing what makes the ones who looked at you think they are any better. I agree with everything that's been said but like you I'm not very brave in that sort of company. We have a wonderful centre for people undergoing cancer treatment where they have all sorts of interesting and informative workshops as well as a walking group and various crafts etc. I really want to go to the nutrition workshop but it took me a whole week of looking at the 'phone number before i rang them. How pathetic is that!
@thistle Do not use the word 'pathetic' Joyce! I would be exactly like that! But its good to recognise that we have foibles and perhaps work on them. It is apparently good for one to get out and socialise!
Wonderful processing - how lovely these ladies were meeting the people from the train. Keep singing if you love it - I love singing but am too shy to join a singing group. I found singing in church to be wonderful - you can really let it out and no one bothers - they just smile and join in!!
Don't they look elegant.
P.S. I hope you do go back to the ukeleles and don't let rude people spoil it for you. If you don't feel comfortable singing, maybe you could just play and mouth the words?
I can well understand you not wanting to go back .....but if you enjoy it then sod them! :)

Good for you, Kathy! You have more oomph than I have! Singing makes you feel good as you say - think I'll have to go to church more often!
