Residing in our comfy rooms in Halifax after a day of discovery, we heard a sound like no other! Opening the door, I saw just up the road, the huge Fort they have here and the sound of cannon fire was coming from there! John contacted the reception fearing we were going to be invaded but they just said, ….. a privately organised event!! The sound was like you would never hear anywhere!
Halifax is wonderful - old buildings, new buildings, great services and many most beautiful public parks everywhere. The Titanic Disaster was a major event here where bodies from the boat were sent and buried in various cemeteries! Then there was the “Halifax Explosion” I can’t believe that I’ve never heard about this!
Three Good Things;
1. A jolly good sleep!
2. Peggy’s Cove with a really good photo as here. The terrain is geologically most interesting!
3. Internet is good in the cities but in between you might as well be on Mars!
So beautiful! You must read "Curse of the Narrows" by Laura M. MacDonald! It is about the explosion that nearly destroyed the city in 1917, and it's FASCINATING! Nearly unbelievable, really. I think that, after having seen the city for yourself, you'll enjoy it. :)
This is a wonderful scene; such a spectacular view of this interesting light house! I like the way that the blue of the ocean and the sky frame the scene.
@juliedduncan thank you for sharing this book idea, it sounds really interesting. This is a great shot of this lighthouse, and I like all of the figures around taking photos too.
Very unusual rocks the lighthouse is sitting on, the figures look quite tiny! All sounds a very interesting place, you are learning so much & John must be enjoying this part of the trip!
@happypat They would be pretty solid rocks too having lasted for centuries! Yes, never did American or Canadian history at school but anyway it is much nicer learning as an adult!
I loved Peggys Cove, and yes, we visited the great museum at Halifax and heard all about their Titanic involvement and the explosion. Lovely photo. Surely brings back memories when we were there in 2010.
@jaffacakes Of course the lighthouses aren't used any more. The driver of our little tour thought my interest in lighthouses was useless as they don't go. Not that he said so in as many words!
Jeff and I went to Nova Scotia many years ago and I wish I could go back. We loved wandering around Peggy's Cove. I had my 35mm then. Imagine how many pictures I'd take now with digital!! Beautiful shot of the lighthouse!
We sailed into Halifax from Liverpool last year, we had such a great time there. We got a 21 gun salute as we sailed out, that was pretty loud but not as scary as the canon, we just happened to be at the fort when it was fired, it scared the living daylights out of me!
Great image, I love lighthouses. They still shine brightly around the coastline here!

! It will be on our bucket list to visit again!
