..van DiemanCape Maria van Diemen is the westernmost point of the North Island of New Zealand. Originally an island composed mainly of basaltic-andesitic lava flows and dykes, drifting sands joined it to the rest of the North Island during the late Pleistocene.
"The cape was named by Abel Tasman, (first European explorer to discover New Zealand) after the wife of his patron, Anthony van Diemen, Governor General of Batavia (now Jakarta) in January 1643, on the same voyage of discovery during which he named Van Diemen's Land (now Tasmania). It is - along with the Three Kings Islands - one of only two geographic features in New Zealand to retain the names given to them by Tasman"
This bay is called Te Werahi and can be seen from Cape Reinga.
Absolutely one of my favorite pictures of all time! The layers of white waves next to the blue sea is magnificent. You made my day with this one. btw, FAV
I missed this kne last night! Just checking out PP & this one stuck out but didn't realise it was yours until the photo came up large.....must know your stamp! That or NZ just draws me in!! Stunning action of waves in this beautiful bay maggiemae. A must place to visit one day! Big Fave!
@happypat On the trail down to the Lighthouse, Pat if you didn't look down to the left hand side, you would completely miss this scene! Wild and desolate - no-one lives anywhere near here!
Grandslam Maggiemae, this sure needs to be hanging up in some fancy hotel lobby or foyer to a fancy business office. Glad it does not appear anyone anytime soon will be building houses or business on this beautiful virgin area. Knocked it out the park with this one. Baseball season just came to a close in America.
@trm Thanks TR! I did see a similar photo on a touristic site but mine was better! The land is all under the control of National Parks Reserve and nobody can build without huge permission!
