Bandit under the bird feeders... by marlboromaam

Bandit under the bird feeders...

Let's be honest! This picture is so bad! LOL! When I saw this raccoon out of the kitchen window, I had to grab the camera and try to shoot it! Was dusky dark and I had to shoot through the glass doors. As soon as I tried to sneak out the back door, it hopped off like a kangaroo! These critters are funny but, they're also part of what happened to my chickens.

A fascinating capture for those of us who has never encountered a raccoon!!

@redrucksack Thank you, Eva! They are nocturnal hunters. Appreciate your kind comments!

@cheribug LOL! This one was the biggest I've seen, Cheryl Thank you for your kind comments!

Are theyas mischievous as Disney's Poccahontas would have us believe? I've never seen one either,not sure I would want him going through my bins.

@sugarmuser They can wreak havoc on a chicken house. They will eat the eggs and kill chickens and eat them, too! They are often infected by rabies and turn around and infect dogs and cats that encounter them! They are cute and i've know a few people that made them pets. But they do have claws and teeth that WILL do some serious harm! I keep my distance from the WILD ones.

I have a like/hate relations with them. I kinda think they are cute BUT they like to eat my goldfish and koi form my pond.
May 18th, 2012
@marlboromaam I didn't know they were carnivores
May 18th, 2012
great quick capture, they are quite the bad guys for sure, but they are cute, we raised some babies when I was young and they did make great pets but once they were grown we turned them back out into the wild.
May 18th, 2012
@sugarmuser They will eat it all! Take a look at this... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wN_m467KJME

@bonniemiles If I still had chickens, Bonnie - this one would be a dead raccoon! I can empathize with your situation, believe me!

Nice catch
May 18th, 2012
@glb484 They can be very nasty, I know! Thank you for sharing your story, Gina!

@kerristephens Thank you, Kerri!

Awesome shot, how cool to have that in your back yard. Fab!

@lizzy_lu123 Thank you, Lisa! Appreciate your comments!
May 18th, 2012
Good catch, Maggie. The rabies thing is a big issue with racoons and they are quite voracious - they'll eat anything.
May 18th, 2012
@meisen325 Thank you, Monica! I certainly don't want them for a pet! And they will be shot (with a bullet) on sight, if I ever have chickens again!
May 18th, 2012
@marlboromaam Atta girl ;)

It's foxes here that kill the chickens. My cousin lost all his in one night. The worst of it is, they kill for pleasure, not for food. Good catch of your bandit - sharp shooter!
May 18th, 2012
Cute critter
May 18th, 2012
@meisen325 LOL!

@janturnbull Thank you, Janet! I wonder what they do eat if they only kill chickens for pleasure. That's awful! Opossums kill chickens and drag off the bodies to rot before they start to eat them. They love to eat the fly larvae growing on the rotting meat! Ugh!

@beckys Thanks, Becky!

Great capture. I know they are trouble, but I love their little masks ; ) When I was at the park one evening (early evening) there was one asleep up in the tree. I got a picture, but you can't tell what it is, so I couldn't post it!!!
May 19th, 2012
@yonnie Keep trying! You never know when the time will be right and you'll get the shot right, too! Thank you, Yvonne!
May 19th, 2012

Looks like he hit the jack pot!
May 19th, 2012
ok, so it is a little blurry...but in the heat of the moment...that happens! at least you have the shot...I am sure he would not have waited around and posed for you like the lizard and squirrels do...these guys are unpredictable, so glad you didn't go out to get up closer!
May 19th, 2012
Cool capture. I think that overall you got a lovely shot.
May 19th, 2012
Nice capture...they are funny...one was in the trash barrel once and my son walked by and it jumps out right in front of him scared the crap right out of him...we still laugh about it today....gotta be careful of them with the rabies though.
May 19th, 2012
Nice catch, I like the photo. I always thought that racoons are so nice and cute and wished I could have one as a pet. The name for them in my language means that they are really clean and they clean everything but I guess it's not true. It's horrible what they do with chickens a other things, I would never guess that.!
May 19th, 2012
@loragill LOL! May have! Thank you for stopping by, Lora!

@vickisfotos Ha ha! No, I don't care to get close to these critters or snakes! Thank you for your kind comments and visit, Vicki! Most appreciated!

@sangwann You are too kind! Thank you, Dione!

@cindyrez LOL! I can imagine that would scare me, too! Thank you for your comments, Cindy! Most appreciated!
May 19th, 2012
@zela Thank you, Alena! Appreciate your kind comments! It's best to leave the wild things alone. LOL!
May 19th, 2012
LOL! Neat capture! It reminds me of the time my sister thought someone was taking the fruit from her trees, so she posted a notice asking them not to take the fruit......turns out it was raccoons and other animals. I told her that I thought they could not read her sign!
May 19th, 2012
well maggie, no racoons in the UK !!! coolio shotsn
May 19th, 2012
@grannysue LOL! No, don't think they can read! Thank you, Linda!
