Bluemont Bell by mcsiegle

Bluemont Bell

Posted in November, but taken back in September. Filling in a couple of empty days in September.

This bell is displayed on the KSU campus. I believe it is the original bell that came from Bluemont College, the forerunner of Kansas State. At the time the legislature was taking up the question of where to place the state university, the Manhattan town fathers and movers and founders of the Bluemont College which was only a few years old at the time, offered the land and building and all assets of that college in an attempt to secure the university for Manhattan. The state university went to Lawrence, but Manhattan got the state land-grant college, which was originally named Kansas State Agricultural College. It later became Kansas State College of Agriculture and Applied Science. It's now Kansas State University and we've just been celebrating the sesquicentennial of KSU. 150 year since it was founded in 1863. Bluemont College, of course, was founded a bit further back yet.
