Flint Hills Discovery Center by mcsiegle

Flint Hills Discovery Center

The 365 Toys this week have the theme of tourism. Well, one of the best spots for tourists to go in Manhattan is the Flint Hills Discovery Center. Imagine my surprise when I discovered that the dinosaurs and Neanderthal Man had been saving for months to be able to buy me a ticket to the Discovery Center for my birthday, which it is today. In fact they had almost enough for one of them to go along, so I decided to kick in the $1.25 extra they needed.

Then we had to decide who would go. I asked Frank if any of these dinosaurs would have lived in the Flint Hills, and he said no, the Flint Hills are Permian substrata and none of them would have been around then. I begged to differ with him -- he had identified the Dimetrodon as Permian back when I did the diorama of the dinosaurs, sorted by prehistoric era.

Well....OK...the Dimetrodon is Permian, but he wouldn't have lived here because this was all underwater. It was a shallow inland sea. That's why the fossils around here are all tiny shells and stuff. Sigh. Just out of curiosity I did a Google search to see where Dimetrodons had lived. Hey! Not so far away, really. Some fossil bones were found in Texas. So that sealed it. He was coming with me.

Frank also said that technically the Dimetrodon is also not a dinosaur (See last week's trip the Mosasaurus and Plesiosaurus -- marine reptiles -- took with me to see a storm drain down the street.) http://365project.org/mcsiegle/365/2015-09-17
Oh, dear. Frank said that within earshot of the Dimetrodon. I hope he wasn't paying attention. As I said last week, as far as I'm concerned, they are all equally Dinosaur -- except Neanderthal Man, but that's understood.

So the Dimetrodon and I headed down to the Discovery Center. Here you see him paying for the tickets. Sarah, who took our money, very patiently counted all the change and single bills the dinosaurs had saved up for the occasion. She also told us the MOST exciting thing! Next summer the Discovery Center will have an exhibit on DINOSAURS!!! All the dinosaurs will want to go see that. All together a very pleasant outing, except for the rain. We stopped on the way home at the library and checked out a couple of books on prehistoric eras and Kansas geology. I have a lot of studying to do.
Happy birthday. Hope you enjoyed the day. Thanks for sharing.
