Mock Caldecott -- the books

On Saturday afternoon I went to the public library for the Mock Caldecott put on by the KSU English Department. I'd been to it two or three years ago, but missed it last year. It starts with time for everyone to spend looking at the assembled books that have been nominated for the prestigious Caldecott award. The home page of the Caldecott Medal says:

"The Caldecott Medal was named in honor of nineteenth-century English illustrator Randolph Caldecott. It is awarded annually by the Association for Library Service to Children, a division of the American Library Association, to the artist of the most distinguished American picture book for children."

After looking at the books, we had a presentation on the Caldecott award by one of the grad students in the Children's Literature track. I was pleased to see Junko Yokota @jyokota quoted on one of the slides as chair of last year's Caldecott committee.

After the presentation we gathered around the table and discussed the books, winnowing down our choices in two rounds and then voting for our first, second, and third choices. Our choice for prize winner, by a huge margin, is a wordless book named "Float" by Daniel Miyares. We'll see how our choice for prize winner, and the honor books that emerged from the voting, line up (or not) with the Caldecott committee's choices.

Here's a picture of some of the participants during the discussion:

@jyokota I wish I hadn't had a conflict when they did the Mock Caldecott last year. I've enjoyed the two times I attended.

Oh, Mary! I'm so sorry I missed this post when you first tagged me. I was madly dashing here and there at the time, and only today as I returned from Boston and this year's announcements did I do a search for "Caldecott" and come across this post! Thank you for even noticing I had been quoted (makes one wonder what could possibly have ben quotable) . . . I agree with you that Float was a wonderful book from this past year, but experience tells me that I'll never know why it wasn't included in the lineup and why others were. :)
