google recently purchased nik and is offering all of their software for free - the best of b & w is nik's silver efex - which enables you to choose various b & w films - and then adjust for contrast etc. https://www.google.com/nikcollection/
@joansmor thanks Joan, I shot in colour, but it was a pretty grey day, so I converted to b&w. I haven't ventured in to Photoshop yet, but I think I'll have to go that way at some stage 😀
I don't think the image works well in monochrome and that is without seeing the coloured file. I am not sure how you are processing in black and white, but one of the things most people do when they first start trying it is that they just change to grayscale or desaturate. If you are using the industry standard Photoshop, and or Lightroom you can do what is called channel mixing so that you enhance, lighten and darken different parts of the picture. The choice of image is essential. Try to find ones with lots of strong varied contrast, maybe diagonals or stripes so that you enhance what is already there. If you use software plugins they can really help you be creative in monochrome. The two best are Topaz B&W Effects and Nik Silver Effex, that latter being free! Hope you don't mind the critique?
