Another garden surprise today that had me "jumping for joy" (actually jumping for the camera!) Two NEW Jack in the Pulpits! These came along with the May Apples I posted the other day. My camera doesn't really like doing these close-ups, but it was such a bright spot in my day I wanted to record it anyway.
I think you should if you've got Trilium already. They even tend to grow in the same type of environment/soil. Thanks for being a faithful commentor Roe Jan. I truly appreciate it!
Thanks Rick; Thanks Pam. Yes, I do live near/in the woods on the eastern side of Pennsylvania. The region I'm in is known as the Poconos- it's a mountainous area alongside the Delaware River which divides PA. from NJ. My husband and I live in a community that is part of a larger township. Our house sits on only 1/3 of an acre, but the property behind us is 9 acres of undeveloped land, so it's as close to living in the woods as you can be around here. Sadly, much building is going on and who knows how long our neighbor will keep this land in it's natural state. So there's your quick tour of my world (o:
As a kid I loved exploring the woods behind my house in Connecticut and discovering those first Spring flowers -- Jack in the Box (not sure what the plural is) and trillium and even skunk cabbage. Great reminder.
Thanks Marti and Allison. Marti, we do enjoy the wildlife here. Allison, I've been tempted to walk into the little bit of woods behind us, but I don't want to annoy the neighbor who does check his borders every now and then. However, there's a state park along the Delaware, a quick trip in the car away and it's my goal this Spring to take advantage of that. I'm working on getting a good pair of sneakers or hiking shoes so I can hit the trail that runs along the Delaware soon. Thanks again to both of you for taking the time to comment!
