This week we're developing our ability to see light and how it affects our subject. It was BITTER cold this morning and yet there I was shoveling my way to the hook I put my bird feeder on in my husband's boots (so much easier to slip on than mine), my winter coat and my pjs! (Yes, I seem to do a lot of silly things in pjs, don't I?) While I was trying to do this task as quickly as possible, I was also trying to take in the way the light was falling across the snow and on the different things in my backyard that haven't been buried by it yet. The sun catchers in my tree caught my eye- especially the one with the little glass orb which had captured the sun and turned the world upside down. I was tempted to crop this so that the reflection was more visible to you, but I really liked the randomness of how the sun catchers are just hanging there and the bokeh in the trees behind them. So, I left it as is after converting it to black and white and working on the contrast a little.
One thing I did note though, while this was still technically sunrise, winter in the northern hemisphere does not necessarily mean you will get that lovely golden tone so often associated with the sunrise or sunset hours. I felt the sun was much harsher, probably due to the fact that there are no leaves on the trees to help filter it. So that was an interesting thing to discover.
I love the way trees make that bokeh. Interesting observation about the light; wonder if it's just not all golden the same way every day. I think winter light is different but don't have words yet.
