Learning About Perserverance

Christopher took us on a tour of the University of the Cumberlands. The campus was really beautiful and we were particularly interested in the statues and sculptures spread out all over the campus.

The plaque on this one reads:

He failed in business in '31.
He was defeated for State Legislature in '32.
He tried another business in '33. It failed.
His fiancée died in '35.
He had a nervous breakdown in '36.
In '43 he ran for Congress and failed again.
He tried again in '48 and was defeated again.
He tried running for the Senate in '55. He lost.
The next year he ran for Vice President and lost.
In '59 he ran for Senate again and lost.
In 1860, the man who signed his name A. Lincoln, was elected the 16th President of the United States.

The difference between history's boldest accomplishments and its most staggering failures, is often, simply, the diligent will to persevere.
Quite interesting photo and narrative! I like that everyone seems to be so intent while reading the inscription.

It looks like a chilly day but everyone seems to be enjoying the tour.

@dsp2 @nicolecampbell @salza @digitalrn
Thank you Dinah, Nicole, Sally and Rick. It was quite impressive to read all the "failures" in Lincoln's life and then to see how it ended up. It certainly makes you think twice about how failure should be approached and what it takes to believe enough in yourself to keep going.

@jennywren Thanks Jen! I loved watching them all taking it in. Especially Micah who can't really read but he was pretending he could!
