The Portland Head Lighthouse, located in Cape Elizabeth Maine, sits on a head of land at the entrance to the primary shipping channel in Portland Harbor. Construction began in 1789 at the directive of George Washington. It was completed in January of 1791 making it the oldest lighthouse in Maine. The station is automated but the Coast Guard maintains the beacon and foghorn. It was originally illuminated by whale oil lamps but in keeping with time and technology now lights the night with a DCB-224 aerobeacon. The light keeper's house is now a maritime museum. The station has changed very little from its original design and build.
While all the lighthouses were photogenic, this one seemed all the more to me. Perhaps it was the day which was absolutely perfect!
Once again I am bombarding you with many pictures- but there's only one more batch to go and then it's back to normal posting in June- phew! Thanks for your patience- and please- don't feel obligated to comment on them all.
Thank you Diana, Winghong, Beryl, Joan, Katy, Kathy, Milanie, and Pam!
@joansmor Thanks for the clarification- I kept thinking it was Whaleback but it wasn't making sense to me as I was certain it was Portsmouth where we saw that. Now I have another one to look up!
