G by olivetreeann

G

As the Greeks continued to develop their alphabet they encountered unusual problems. The sounds of their language did not always match the sounds of the letters they had adopted from the Phoenician alphabet. This led to the development of new letters that denoted vowel sounds called diphthongs. A diphthong combines two vowels to signify a distinct vowel sound. Eventually these letters became associated with long vowel sounds like the long e sound in the word "keep". Several varieties of the Greek alphabet developed, but eventually the Athenians chose to use the Eastern version and all others followed suit. Another interesting but unknown fact is that originally Greek also read from left to right like Hebrew (a throw back to its Semitic roots), but that too was abandoned to the Phoenician style of writing which went right to left.

Thanks to everyone- thanks sooo much! I love all your comments and appreciate them too! I really am enjoying this challenge and I can't believe how many letters I see- I've started taking them ahead of time so that I won't forget where they are! This shadow was a complete surprise- it's right by my front door and was made by the hanger of our front door light- I was originally looking for an E, but when I really looked at it, I knew it was meant to be a G. Thanks again to everyone!!

@joannapayne Thanks Joanna! I noticed that and thought the same thing! It is fun- even the approach is a bit different and I enjoying seeing how others took on the subject.
