Hurricane Sandy Day 1 by olivetreeann

Hurricane Sandy Day 1

We had power for most of the day Monday, even though we had several power blips. At first I thought we might make it through the storm without losing it altogether. But at 4:30 pm, Sandy took the power out for good. Thankfully we'd stored up water and our wood stove heats the house but we didn't know how long we would have to make do without running water and lights. The winds were pretty strong but we didn't see the full force of them until Tuesday. Interestingly, we didn't really feel them as strongly as we thought we would at ground level. But it was quite apparent by the way the treetops were swaying that the gusts were everything they were predicted to be. At one point in the evening I looked across the street and it looked like the trees had been parted down the middle like someone parts the hair on their head!

(Although I'm posting this shot for the 30th, it was actually taken on Monday shortly after Sandy took out our lights.)
You're back!! How are you doing?

@kerristephens Hi Kerri! Yes, finally back on 365! Our power went out last Monday and came back on 7 days later. I am doing well- thanks for asking. Saddened by the vote, but trusting that God will somehow help us through the next 4 yrs.

This is most abstract, but I like it! Glad you have weathered the storm, great to have you back. :-)

It was a tough one on a lot of people, and it can be frustrating to wait through all the repairing and doing without.Glad to have you back on with us

Sorry you were in the dark so long, and like you, I'm sad about the election results but it is what it is I guess and hopefully like you say God will lead us in the right path.

Thank you Lyn, Sally, Alia, Dione, Rick and Carole! Your warm welcomes are a real blessing! It's good to be on the other side of this shot and not need the candles anymore! But in spite of the inconvenience, I realize we weathered the storm with more than most people in the world have every day. And when I'd start to move in to "pity party" mode, I'd remind myself of that and it always put things in perspective. Adversity can be a wonderful teacher.

Fascinating shot - and I'm so glad you made it through all the storm despite the 'adversity' as you say :)

Yay!!!!!!!!!!!!!! You're back!!! I've missed you! I was wondering if you were caught up in that storm! Our power went out at the exact same time! Fortunately we got restored 10 hours later. We had a power pole top snap right off which is what knocked us out. I have pictures of some of the damage. I put a link to it on a post from that day. I have more to upload to the album. I'm so glad you are okay!!!! Very cool abstract you posted. So glad you have power again! And I'm glad you had wood stove because it has been freezing since then!

A candle always brings a ray of light and there is always hope after the storm. :-)

@filsie65 Thanks Phil! Another interesting thing I've noted about adversity is that it brings out both the best and the worst in people!
@prttblues Thanks Bev! I knew you'd be wondering where I was! The power couldn't come back fast enough- lol. I did have one night where I was able to post a quick hello- but I didn't want to tie up my friend's computer for hours so I popped on and off in a flash. Glad you got your power back so quickly this time! I did look at some of your pictures today but I don't remember the pole. I'll have to remember to check for that again.
@vposey Thanks Vickie! I do appreciate the candles for a quick remedy but trying to read by them night after night gave me a headache! lol I was so glad the neighbor bought a generator and hooked us up on night #5!

i've gotten in the habit of checking my 365 at work. i've seen this when you first posted it and my first reaction was 'what is it?' i still can't figure out what it is. partner and i had prepared for sandy and he was quite amused at my ideas for if and when we'll have emergency situation. so i regaled him with stories from when i was growing up in the old country and we'd have typhoon after typhoon and stranded at home with no power because of flooding. i wasn't thrilled though at the thought of an extended power failure and that's the only thing that made me get into a heavy sweat! lol!
