In the Style of Michael Kenna by olivetreeann

In the Style of Michael Kenna

Michael Kenna said of his photographs, "I like to think of my work as visual haiku. It is an attempt to evoke and suggest through as few visual elements as possible rather than to describe with tremendous detail". Kenna usually works out of doors, but I am basically housebound this week so I set my mind to thinking about how Kenna's style might translate into an interior shot. This is what I came up with.
Cool

@kerristephens Thank you Kerri!
@summerfield Thank you Vikki! I had a couple different ideas, but this one hands down looked the most like Kenna's style. Well, now I have two good reasons for not having any furniture in my house!

Well done Ann

Haiku is a new word for me. Wikipedia reads as: The essence of haiku is "cutting" … This is often represented by the juxtaposition of two images…, You shot gave me a perfect image of “Haiku”.

Really nice one! Great balance in this image and good use of negative space.

So interesting. I never knew that about his work. Housebound? I hope everything's okay.

@bkbinthecity Thank you Brian!
@yaorenliu Thank you Yao! I knew that Haiku was a form of poetry- usually very short with strong images, so that was interesting that it is based on the word "cutting".
@taffy Thank you Taffy! He does a lot with negative space in his photography- quite beautiful in the nature shots.
@twr Thank you Timothy!
@sangwann Thank you Dione!
@salza Thank you Sally! I was impressed by how he uses one strong line in his landscape shots surrounded by a lot of negative space.
@traceyhn Thank you Tracey!
@digitalrn Thank you Rick!
@kali66 Thank you Kali!
@mrssmith203 Thank you Carla! The car needs some tlc. It's driveable but rather than put more wear and tear on it than necessary, I'm just staying close to home. I can't say I really want to go out though. It's been in the upper 90's this week and very humid. I don't do too well in that kind of weather, so all the more reason to stay home. Thanks for asking!

Bev
Nice shot, Ann! :) Why are you housebound? I hope everything is okay with you. I apologize that I am just catching up on shots now. I know it's been a week... That's my fault....

Anyway............... this is a very nice shot. I love the simplicity of it yet it's very artistic. It says so much without really saying anything at all (as if that makes sense!!) ... I think you did an excellent job on this! :)

Cool shot. Creative too!

@prttblues Thanks Bev! Nothing serious- the car needs some tlc so I'm just hanging out at home and not driving unless I have to. That's all- thanks for asking! (o: Glad you like the shot.
@daisy Thanks Kathryn! This was fun to challenge to translate to my home. It's not what the artist generally shoots.

This is clever, great composition

Well, I totally love how you incorporated Kenna's style into indoor photography!!! Such a bold idea, and such a wonderful image!

@nicolecampbell Thank you Nicole!
@lunaksi Thank you Lunaksi! It is an example of creativity borne out of necessity. Of course it helps that most of the furniture is in storage while we paint the living room!

I,love the write up you did here! And splendid job with translating his style to an inside shot!
