I felt I should do a more "serious" version of the Back to School composite to balance out the silliness of the one with Piggy and the Critters. The building in the background was taken in 2011 and it's the school I attended from kindergarten until 6th grade. The ruler is one I've had for a long time- might have even been from my grammar school days for all I know! The pencils are more current, but #2 pencils are a staple of schools when children are learning to write. And lastly that adorable line of children is my self, my cousins, my sister and our grandmother being welcomed by the principal. We had someone from our family in every grade in the school (and two in 5th grade!). I think the picture was taken around 1966.
What I find so neat to see is picturing this with children dressed as they do today to head to school - oh for the earlier days! More noticeable now when they're old enough to demand choosing their own clothes for school :)
Thank you Taffy, Maggie, Milanie, Kathy, Jackie, Babs, Brian and Rob!
I find the key to blending composites is one of two things: 1) pictures you can put into similar types of processing (such as all black and white or all textured like a painting for ex.) or 2) pictures which all have a similar perspective and background which allows them to look like they were taken together. In this case it was a little of both- I was able to convert all the color components (the ruler, the pencils and the school) to black and white to match the picture of my family which originally appeared in the local paper.
@maggiemae Mostly yes- I was very much on the shy side and also a little awkward so I did get some teasing BUT I had the support of my mom and dad, a small group of good friends and a teacher and the school librarian who encouraged me to do the things I loved- reading, drawing and writing.
@milaniet There is a funny story about the dress I'm wearing in this picture. It was pleated all the way around and had special washing instructions which my mother didn't see so that when she washed the dress, all the pleats came out! I was so upset as this was one of the first dresses I picked out myself. My mom was so sorry she'd ruined the dress she went back to the store and bought me another one (which is the one I'm wearing in this picture). But yes, I know what you mean- we rarely wore pants or sleeves tops to school. Most of the time it was dresses, bobby socks and tie-shoes. Times have changed for sure!!
Love it. In my old photos, everyone has angry faces, and here are so many smiles. And with us were mandatory big bows in the hair. I liked them and wove them in braids for a long time.
@eudora Thank you Diane- this was a fun one to put together. It took me some time to find the picture of the school- but it was worth the three hours of culling through my CD archives to find it!
@haskar Thank you Haskar! Many of my cousins were also my friends so we all got along. I would have loved to have long hair and bows- in fact after this grade, I told my mother I no longer wanted short hair and could I please grow it out? I had long hair after that and still do!
Ann, this is absolutely AMAZING!!!! The work and thought you put into this is incredible. You totally could get this printed and put on your wall. You creativity never ceases to amaze me! Great job on this!
@not_left_handed Thank you so much Dawn- that's very kind of you to say. I truly have fun putting all the pieces together. I have to remind myself to post this on my family's Facebook page- I think my cousins would get a kick out of what I did to it. Thank you so much for the fav!
