Winter wheat

My sister and I love our country walks but are often puzzled by what the crops are in the fields.
This obliging farmer had put a detailed notice on the edge of his field telling us that this is winter wheat planted straight after his maize crop was harvested.
The field was shallow ploughed to reduce the amount of carbon released into the atmosphere.
It was a good school day for us yesterday.
