For those outside the UK, 'The Big Issue; is a magazine sold on the streets. The 'Big Issue' exists to offer homeless and vulnerably housed people the opportunity to earn a legitimate income. 'Big Issue' produce a weekly entertainment and current affairs magazine which vendors buy for £1 and sell to the public for £2, keeping £1 for themselves.
This lady in the picture stands outside the same shop 6 days a week trying to sell the magazine. The picture is meant to show what a lonely job it is and she is small in the frame to emphasise how little contact she has with the public.
You can see people reflected in the window walking by her ignoring her calls of 'Big Issue please'.
The thing is the are is flooded by 'Big Issue' sellers, there are another two within 400 yards of her and this is in a small suburb north of the city
I'm struck by the juxtaposition of her poverty and vulnerability in front of the shop window full of consumer goods - and, yes, the black and white works well.
Slice of life for this young lady. Her expression says it all. Thanks for the explanation, Phil, I like reading stories that describe the photos - especially when there's such a story behind them. :-) Nice use of b&w.
@meredithwb Meredith, thank you for taking time to comment on my picture. I agree that it is good to know some background information about a picture. You now know what a Big Issue seller is in the UK ! I always try to explain my pictures (sometimes in great detail) ! Phil
A lot going on in this shot. " I like it " as the sign states. B&W is the right choice. I must say she does look bored, she may sell more with a bit of smile! The refections of the city around her are great. Nicely done.
Did you buy a copy from her? :o)
Did I buy a Big Issue, I;ve bought them in the past and they are not particular good reads, so in answer to your question, no !
