UPSIDE DOWN CANAL ! by phil_howcroft

UPSIDE DOWN CANAL !

Lunchtime walk at work again !

Mobile phone picture again !

Canal picture again !

According to popular opinion, reflections in a picture are meant to be more interesting than the main subject. You can be the judge of that statement.

I've rotated todays picture through 180 degrees so the reflections become the main subject and the subject the reflection !!

Does it work? To a certain extent I think it does.

The bit of green in the top left hand corner is the canal bank.

I've bumped the saturation a bit up in the post processing, but that's all i've done ! Maybe I should have cropped the image so it is all 'reflection'

Remember you are looking at a mobile phone picture, not a DSLR or high end compact !!

Hope it works for you :)

Oh and why do I keep putting too many exclamation marks in my narrative description ? !!
Phil
Oooh, that messed with my head a bit... thats not a bad thing :)

Anita, oops sorry about that !!

Very pretty

@kerristephens Thank you Kerri :)

Still waters run deep - I like the increased saturation - adds to the slight confusion!
March 7th, 2011
@judithg Judith , yes it is a tad confusing. I think the leaves in the water throw you a little as do the angles !
March 7th, 2011
I meant it in a good way :)
March 7th, 2011
@anron Anita, yes I guessed you did, ha ha :)

I like the reflections in the water, amazing how clear the upside down image is there..the water must have been really still...now to turn my head back up right :^)
March 7th, 2011
@patsyjphillips Patsy, thanks for your comments. I dont know if it would have been better with a bit of movement in the water, but the canal is very still other than the occassional duck floating by. I took nearly 30 photos in 20 minutes by the canal...not all of the same boat I may add !

!!! Blimey !! Had me turning my laptop upside down... Like it as immediately feel something's not quite right but can't quite work it out..

This is very interesting! I like what you've done with it! the reflection was perfect, so it works no matter how you present it!

You seem to have begun to enjoy the awakenings of Spring. This is a lovely vista, full of color and light. Love the angles of the boat, especially.

Great reflections - Ken love to photograph them
March 8th, 2011
@andycoleborn Andy, it does look a little strange in places , thanks for looking.
March 8th, 2011
@jenlyn999 Thanks Jennifer, glad you approve :)
March 8th, 2011
@allie912 Allison, thanks for taking time to comment, as for enjoying the first awakenings of spring, we've had a ground frost the last two nights but it has got to about 10C during the day, The yellow bush (winter jasmine - i think) is about the only bush at the moment that is showing colour.

@keneva Eva, thank you for your comments, Ken must have good taste if he likes reflections :)
March 8th, 2011
@gill Gill thank you very much for your kind comments and it's good that my 180 degree reversed reflection meets with your approval. I hope you did not hurt your head swivelling it around....I've not known any ladies turn their head at me before !

Nice reflection shot. I am partial to presenting the shot as taken, but it does work in this case.
March 8th, 2011
Thanks Constance, I was trying something different, I still don't know if it works.
March 8th, 2011
This is brilliant, for a moment I thought to myself 'No, that can't be a reflection, it's too clear' until I turned my laptop upside down and it all made sense! Fascinating shot and great idea rotating it!
March 8th, 2011
@haevans Thank you Hannah, Brilliant :) , that is far too kind of you , the rotating seems to have been quite popular :)
March 8th, 2011
great shot - there's been a few of these around - I haven't found a bright enough or stillenough day to try !!
March 8th, 2011
Juliette, thanks agin for stopping to look and comment on my pictures :)
March 8th, 2011
Great!
March 9th, 2011
@vvpe Thanks Veronica :)
March 9th, 2011
I think it works well. Makes it more interesting with the brightest area the "reflection" and the make subject more muted. I like it.
March 9th, 2011
@wac Thanks Wendy, I would have liked a litle duck swimming across the reflection to really confuse matters :)
March 9th, 2011
cool shot - this is so effective to turn the image upside down! Took me a while to figure out...! ^_^
March 11th, 2011
@yoori Thanks Yoori, glad you like it :)

Great idea for a shot, Phil - and it's worked really well here.

You said "Maybe I should have cropped the image so it is all 'reflection' " - I think it works just as it is, so there's the contrast between the real and the reflected.

(o: :o)

Did you have to stand on your head to take it though?
March 14th, 2011
@robinmersh Ha Ha Robin, Haven't you got any work to do !!!
March 14th, 2011
